In The Colgate Comedy Hour – Bolamania, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello visit the fictional South American country Bolamania, Lou is mistaken for its dictator! And assassination attempts ensue! Originally aired 4/18/1954
Comedy routines
- Bud and Lou do the passe-passe bottles, where a covered bottle and covered glass seem to change places. After a few successful attempts, Lou “borrows” one of the bottles and has Bud try to do it again! Once he finds out that the second bottle is missing, he tries to move on — but no! Lou insists! And so, he does it again — successfully! Leaving Lou flabbergasted.
- At the same time, there’s a routine, reminiscent of Poko Moko, where Bud insists that the covers are made of pure silver. Lou realizes that they’re tin — and gets slapped whenever he says that word!! To the point where Bud’s teasing him, trying to get him to say it one more time …
- Nobody hits El Presidente!
- In the restaurant, Lou has to do a shooting duel with El Presidente, to prove which is the real dictator
- First, he has to shoot a cigarette out of Bud’s mouth! But to make it more impressive, he breaks it in half! Then again! And again! And poor Bud’s increasingly nervous each time.
- Next, Lou & El Presidente have to shoot at a cuckoo clock. When it’s Lou’s turn, he not only hits the clock, the breaks all the glassware next to it! Then the poor cuckoo comes out & dies!
- Tamale routine with Bobby Barber.
- When Lou’s finally “convinced” to act as El Presidente’s body double, there’s a funny bit as the four bodyguards match his every movement! Its reminiscent of the Marx Brothers’ mirror routine.
Assassination attempts
- Someone throws a knife at Lou – so he uses it to hang Abbott’s hat on it!
- Several at the dinner table, including multiple poisoning attempts. When Lou pours his soup into a flower plant — the poor flowers wither & die.
- The inexhaustible bottle routine – where the same pitcher pours wine, then water.
- The “hand under the table” that keeps trying to poison Lou
- The gigantic cake with a bomb in it, that blows Lou into the air, ending the sketch
